About Project
“Who just came in?” Most smart locks today can't answer that question. Durin was built to close that gap. Through their MagicKey™ technology, a multi-layered identity verification system combining device signals, facial recognition, and physical presence, they're making home access truly personal. A world where access codes are retired, every entry is documented, and identity is genuinely verified.
My Role
I joined the project as Lead UI/UX Designer, working in close collaboration with the product manager and marketing lead to design the full mobile experience, iOS and Android, from A to Z. Starting from zero design infrastructure, we built a complete, launch-ready product experience.
Design System
I built a scalable design system that reflected Durin's brand values from the ground up. The core deliverables included a component library, color and typography scales, accessibility standards, and a developer handoff guide. Every screen was built on top of this system, ensuring consistency as the team grew and the product evolved.
Product Design
I designed every touchpoint a user has with the app, from first launch and account creation, to device pairing and the MagicKey™ authentication flow, daily home access experience and entry history, notification management, guest and family member invitation flows, all the way through to settings and account management. No flow was left to someone else.
Challenge & Solution
Security technology products have a classic pitfall: they tend to feel technical, cold, and distant. For Durin, I aimed for the opposite: a visual language and interaction system that feels trustworthy yet warm, powerful yet approachable. Translating complex processes like facial recognition and multi-factor authentication into intuitive, stress-free mobile moments was the most challenging and rewarding part of this project.
Outcome
Durin showcased MagicKey™ at MWC Barcelona 2026 and announced a strategic partnership with Philips Home Access. The close collaboration with the Project Manager kept the design process focused and efficient throughout, and the design system and product experience we built from scratch provided a scalable foundation for the company's continued growth.
